SynologyNAS:How to promote DS210j from Basic Mode (1disk) to RAID1(2disks)?


  • Assume:
  1. Diskstation: DS210j
  2. DSM version: DSM3.1-1748
  3. Installed Harddisk: Seagate ST31000528AS, 3.5" SATA2,1TB/7200RPM/32MB_cache
  4. New Harddisk to be added: Seagate ST1000DM003, 3.5" SATA,1TB/7200RPM/64MB_cache
-> Note:
  • Any compatible harddisk of size 1TB or above is ok!
  • No need to format the new harddisk before installing it into the diskstation
  • Check if it is a DS210j-compatible-harddrives before buying the new Harddisk Here

  • Procedures:
  1. Backup your Diskstation fully
  2. Install the new harddisk into the diskstation and power up
  3. login DSM as admin
  4. click on the top-left-most button
  5. then go 儲存空間管理員, you should see 儲存類型：Basic, 檔案系統： ext3,...
  6. Good to do "SMART" test for the new Harddisk before promoting to RAID1?
  7. -> Click "管理" -> 更改 RAID 類別 -> RAID1
  8. -> 選擇：硬碟2, ST1000DM003-9YN1,931.5GB
  9. -> click "next" -> "Yes" -> "Apply"
  10. Wait patiently for the upgrade to complete
  11. It may take 5-8hours depending on the size of the harddisk, as DSM will check thoroughly if any bad sectors)
(it seems that we can continue our works and use the diskstation as normal, without any performance downgrade, during this upgrade!)
